Thought For The Day

Cradle Catholic. Active in the pro-life movement since 1973. Father of three, one in Heaven, and happily married for 43 years. Small town lawyer and amateur historian. Former president of the board of directors of the local crisis pregnancy center for a decade.
The bloating is in part due to the projection of politics onto the office and man. People see the Pope as a president-figure rather than the Servant of the Servants of God. There is a necessary humility required to absorb that aspect of the role; it is not innate to fallen humanity. Ergo, we get the rock star Pope.
May it stop.
The modern papacy grew in power and prestige in part to counteract relentless attempts to nationalize churches (and episcopal nominations) from the Reformation through the Enlightenment and Euro-nationalist movements of the early 19th century (Gallicanism, Josephinism, etc.) It accomplished some great things: one can’t imagine St. Pius X reforms, the diplomatic efforts of Pius XI and XII, or the destruction of Communism under John Paul II occurring without a strong papacy. Yet Satan finds ways to exploit weak or strong popes, for which there is no cure but holiness.
We certainly need a pope strong INSIDE the Vatican, and then we can argue what we want him to do OUTSIDE.
Yes, Francis served Caesar in too many ways. Sad.
