Thought For The Day

De mortuis nil nisi bonum: A tall order with the late Cardinal McCarrick.
Here’s his roommate Cardinal Kevin Farrell. They shared an apartment for several years. A bold face liar.
For his silence and complicity he became a Bishop and a Cardinal and he was appointed by Francis as prefect of the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life (since 2016), as Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church (since 2019) and as President of the Supreme Court of Vatican City (since 2024).

Christopher has a point, his brother bishops let him sail towards Hades (and his victims suffer) without correction.
Whoever told “uncle ted” that sodomy was no sin and even innocent needs to put a millstone about his neck and drown himself in the depths of the sea along with the 4,000 swine possessed by Legion, the devil. uncle ted cheated God out of his innocent soul created in original innocence by the Infinite Supreme Sovereign Being.
IF what is alleged is true, his is emblematic of our decayed age. NO ONE had the guts to call this guy out publicly and forcefully. We value our a safety too much to remain a free people for much longer.
IF he did what he was alleged to have done, he should have been prosecuted, persecuted, or both – for his own ultimate good. One can’t repent until the excuses for the evil are swept away.
Ignore my IF.
I had not realized that the hierarchy belated got off its posterior and acted.
In situation like this, I regret the loss of the pillory as a means of public punishment.
Wikipedia says: “He was expelled from the Jesuit Xavier High School in his junior year for missing classes”…hmmm
Then McCarrick “missed an academic year due to the expulsion, but a friend of his family was able to help get him into the Jesuit Fordham Preparatory School. At Fordham, he was elected student council president..”..
McCarrick lied to the end saying he never “had sexual relations with anyone, man, woman or child, nor have I ever sought such acts.”
It’s clear he was charismatic, with a high level of political intelligence and connected enough to evade justice for a long long time. And still managed to climb to the highest level of the Church hierarchy.
The screening done to scrutinise a man’s character before allowing them into the Priesthood has caused so much damage to the Church.
I hope the victims have the peace knowing he will be facing Gods ultimate Justice now.
If I understand correctly, McCarrick’s objects were seminarians, though there have been some accusations in re adolescents. Not sure police would take an interest in that. At the very least, it would require the officers persuade a seminarian that his co-operation was extorted.
Persuade a seminarian to testify that his co-operation was extorted.
McCarrick would have been ordained around 1955. IIRC, he was a college professor before he was a bishop, though I cannot recall where he was on the faculty. Touchstone magazine had a forum on seminary formation about 20 years ago and one of the participants (a one-time seminarian) said that in fairness to the bishops of the time the sort of transgressions which have destroyed the good name of the clergy were outside their imagination, too obscene to contemplate.

McCarrick had a rather eccentric upbringing. He grew up in a Manhattan apartment whose inhabitants included his mother, her three spinster sisters, and his maternal grandparents. (His father died when he was four; the man was a mariner so never in residence full time). I think he he had a pair of uncles who lived locally and had children; those cousins would have been his most proximate contemporaries. (His father’s family was out of the Virginia Tidewater). I do wonder how that influenced the development of his character and personality.
James Grein was 11, not even a teenage.
There is a photo of McCarrick’s arm around him while both are wearing swim suits. It appears Grein is not happy with his position.
