The great lesson of our Civil War is that we are all Americans, North and South, white and black. Anyone who can view the Civil War and derive from that awful national crossroads only current hatred, is deeply un-American.

We need to keep reminding people that the only ones who celebrated Jim Crow were its perpetrators, nearly all of whom were Democrat politicians. My Republican parents raised me with a strict code of respect for all people, based on our status as God’s children.

Mary, there were supporters and opponents in both parties. There were no Southern supporters in the Senate.
