The fatheads at the USCCB are creating a giant strawman with their deeply stupid statement. No one who advocates for both the enforcement of our immigration laws and for border security is saying that illegal immigrants somehow forfeit their humanity. Deportation is not a violation of human rights.
What is a gross affront to human dignity is the misery produced by years of neglecting our border security and refusing to make it possible to enforce our immigration laws.
Our porous borders have made it possible for a staggering amount of drugs to enter this country— and degrade and ruin and end millions of lives as a result. That’s what I’d call an affront to human dignity. The violence that surrounds the cartels, whose profits and very business is made possible by our wide-open borders— that too is an affront to human dignity.
The lack of border security has resulted in a tsunami of human trafficking. Most of the women crossing the border will be sexually assaulted— either by those with whom they travel, or by the ‘coyotes’ whom they must pay to guide and transport them. Their plight, and the violation of their human dignity is a direct result of years of failed immigration policy. Similarly, it is conservatively estimated that in the past four years about five hundred thousand children have been trafficked over our southern border, to be exploited in ways no sane person wants to think about. The fate of those children is a direct result of our wide-open border. And I would say to the sanctimonious statement-writers at the USCCB that if they were looking for an example of the denial of human dignity, it would be in this— a situation caused not by enforcing our immigration laws, but by ignoring them.
I would have far more inclination to pay attention to statements such as these if there were ever counter-balancing statements or discussions about the obligations that migrants have to their host country, such as following its laws, assimilating into its culture and customs, learning its language, contributing to its common good, etc.
It would also be nice to see a discussion about the moral implications of those who knowingly violate the laws of a nation as their first act of entering it. Why is that not an equal affront to “human dignity” of the people of a nation?
Follow the money, the bishops don’t want the gravy train from federal money given to “assist” migrants. My husband and I will not give one more penny to the Church until the corruption is cleaned up and faithful bishops lead the church. We are both converts to the Catholic church and daily wonder why we bothered, but don’t know where else to go!
That should say they don’t want the gravy train to stop!
Jeri, you are exactly right. (Clinton and Jason, too.) This is a sad example of the love of money being the root of all evil. Ses Dr. Anthony Stine’s recent video on the subject. The UselessCCB is going to be in serious financial trouble when Trump cuts off their “resettlement of migrants” funding from the Federal government. It’s way past time.

The solution to this problem is simple: stop donating any money to anything that the USCCB supports or advocates. Just stop. And stop giving to any Bishop’s Appeal or anything Diocesean. If you have a traditional parish and a good priest, then give there, but starve the rest. When they don’t have money, then they’ll shrivel up and die as they ought.
As with all criminals, just follow the money. Seems the USCCB is the Judas club. We give nothing beyond the local parish and right to life groups.
