The map is worse than it seems as births to illegal aliens from Muslim countries is artificially inflating numbers in Western Europe. The West fell in love with birth control and abortion. Children are a gift from God. Throw His gift back in His Teeth often enough and the gift stops being given. The US is below replacement rate.

Greece, Spain, Italy, and Poland are at the lower end of real GDP per capita for Europe among the big countries. The first three also have a lot of debt. High debt-to-GDP and low birth rate are a vicious circle. The good news is that a lot of the slightly-better-but-still-low birthrate countries are seeing a resurgence in the Faith, and it’s more the Protestantism literally and figuratively dying out. Also, the latest wave of immigration is from Eastern Europe.

My AA sponsor told me long ago that God’s punishment is letting me have my own way. He does that not just with individual people, but with entire civilizations, too.
The sad thing is that the low birth rate is indicative of a lack of Faith. Particularly in the Catholic countries – Italy, Spain, Croatia, Portugal, Poland etc…the reality is that the cost of living and prioritising personal comfort over having children is holding people back from having more than one child. Meanwhile China are learning this the hard way…the world is mad.
