The backlash was tremendous.  This very bad idea could only have been thought a good one in a Leftist ideological bubble.  The Brits lost any right to interfere in our politics in 1776.

There’s “still” quite a bit of fanciful patronizing in the UK over “their” lost colony in the upper classes.

When my wife’s uncle (100% Italian ancestry) visited the UK from the US for a high level business meeting they told him:
“Welcome to the mother country.” He was stunned. And they were serious.
