Eighth century hermit near Croyland in what is now England. Legend claims that he was married to an Irish princess. She went into labor and gave birth in a forest. He want for help and while he was gone wolves came and ate her and a child. Certainly strong motivation for a man to become a hermit, dedicated to God and to solitude.
