A reminder that while de Gaulle may have been a bit of a pill, at least he ran the country with stature. The crop of presidents there since seem to stumble from one situation to the next with no direction.
That is the French style of leadership: an outstanding one: Louis XIV, Napoleon, Clemenceau, DeGaulle, surrounded by, at best, mediocrities.
Man, I’ve been frowned at like that by women, but I’ve never been smiled at like that. You can just see if there’s been hand sanitizer nearby, she would have rubbed some in her eyes.

Isn’t it more accurate to say that much of the European ruling class holds the people in contempt and disdain? Populism is a response to the European ruling class running unholy roughshod over the common man. The pandemic exposed the rot and corruption in the Western ruling class.

The older generation of French seem to have an affection for de Gaulle while enjoying jokes at his expense (something I gleaned from an older French priest I knew in Rome). Example: De Gaulle and his wife were walking in the park when suddenly de Gaulle stumbled and fell to his knees. “Mon Dieu!” his wife exclaimed. Exasperated, de Gaulle snarls at her, “I’ve told you, never call me that in public!”
