And So It Remains

The growth of tyranny is ever preceded by a lack of empathy.  The belief that other people are not flesh and blood brothers and sisters under God, but rather misguided opponents who we can have terrible things done to for what we believe is the greater good.  CS, do you wish to comment?

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be “cured” against one’s will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.”

Excellent except for this: “they may be more likely to go to heaven….”

…they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

I believe that the author is indicating that they are so deep in presumption, because of their unformed consciences. They truly believe that they are right and righteous, hence why wouldn’t they believe that they themselves are the elect?
God’s people. The future inhabitants of heaven.

It would seem that a certain blindness infects individuals as conscience is smothered by various popular trends that mimic truth.
The National Socialists of Germany.
The LGBTQ movement.
The Democrats.

In the above movements a well formed conscience is lacking. In the deficiency a substitute so powerful is able to convince oneself that;

• abortion on demand is a sacred right.
• homosexuality is to be celebrated.
• the eradication of Jews is sensible.
• the removal of God from our party’s platform is
progressive.

Without a formed conscience one will fall for anything.

Tyranny is always better organized than freedom.
