Seems like a good time to (re)post one of my favorite paragraphs from Chesterton’s The Everlasting Man. (I’m paraphrasing.) “At the end of the eighteenth century, the enemies of the Church were planning her funeral. But during the course of that funeral, the corpse did something very surprising: it cam back to life.”

I like to remind people of the triumphant declaration of the New South Wales Premier Henry Parkes when introducing his Education Act to Parliament in 1871, providing for the setting up of free secular government schools designed to undercut the (very low fee) Catholic schools: “This legislation is the death knell of the Roman Church!” (i.e. Catholic Church).
