Lincoln never hated the South nor Southerners. His goal was ever to win the peace as well as the war. He wanted to make certain that the terrible trial the nation had passed through would never be repeated. Those who attempt to use the Civil War to stir up contemporary hatred do the Devil’s work. Their target is not the long dead Confederacy but rather the United States.
