Humility

The Litany of Humility reminds me of this prayer found in the pocket of a dead Confederate soldier:

I asked God for strength that I might achieve.
I was made weak that I might learn humbly to obey.
I asked for health that I might do greater things.
I was given infirmity that I might do better things.
I asked for riches that I might be happy.
I was given poverty that I might be wise.
I asked for power that I might have the praise of men.
I was given weakness that I might feel the need of God.
I asked for all things that I might enjoy life.
I was given life that I might enjoy all things.
I got nothing that I asked for, but everything I hoped for.
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.
I am, among all men, most richly blessed.

Both strongly resonate with the Catholic practice of offering up our pain, our frustrations, and the 1001 matters which vex us in this Vale of Tears.  At the battle of Lepanto the Catholic chaplains preached one sermon:  No Heaven for Cowards.  God loves our courage, our patience and our endurance when done in the name of Him who walked the path of the Cross and bade us do likewise.

God loves our courage, our patience and our endurance when done in the name of Him who walked the path of the Cross and bade us do likewise.

Amen.

I imagine that Our Father sees a bit of His Son in our offerings and even though we don’t always perfectly imitate our big brother, Our Father still smiles at the effort put forth.

Thank God for our Mother.

She IS perfection personified and she helps to make the clumsiest of followers humble, pius, even tempered, wise and generous.
It is Mary who prepares us and escorts us to the throne of God.

I have found that every time I pray the Litany of Humility, God presents me in short order with an opportunity to prove that I meant it. I usually fail.
