I was 12 and my brother 10 when my father a USAF officer and WWII vet took us to many of the WWI and WWII Allied cemeteries in Europe. My father explained the battle and we said a prayer for the fallen at each cemetery.. It was a very sobering experience for me and in my mind’s eye I can still see row upon row of grave markers.

In Flanders Fields

by Major John McCrae a Canadian physician in WWI and a Boer War vet. He died in 1915 at Boulogne No.3 General Hospital to oversee medicine. He worked there until his pneumonia-related death on January 28, 1918, at the age of 45.

BY JOHN MCCRAE ad

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
        In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
        In Flanders fields.

as an aside the feed and seed store in Mt Holly VA always has the red poppies for sale.
