They think I’m a saint… When I’m dead, they’ll come and touch holy pictures and rosaries to me, and all the while I’ll be getting broiled on a grill in purgatory. At least promise me you’ll pray a lot for the repose of my soul.
Saint Bernadette
Something for the weekend. Song of Bernadette from the film Song of Bernadette (1943).
Bonus:
This was a different Hollywood.
When asked by a profiter if the young Bernadette would like to travel the world and make much money telling her story, the humble Bernadette responded; “I wish to remain poor.”
Into the convent, then into our hearts.
Please pray for us, St. Bernadette.
We need them.
Mary, the Immaculate Conception came to help us realize that the newly begotten human being has a soul since his conception. The soul is the life of the man. Mary appeared at Guadaloupe and cannibalism ended.
A most extraordinary work of art. I never tire of it.
Just hearing the music is inspiring. The film is wonderful, one of my all-time favorites of any genre. How we need more of these, but we’ll have to be content with the old films. There won’t be any lovely new ones coming out. I see the “Journey to Bethlehem” film ad, but it looks politically correct and this is premature, but chances are it stinks.
That moment she sees Our Lady….you feel like you see her.
I remember reading about Bernadette. They poked her hard with pins, she didn’t move. Flashed lights in her eyes, put a candle near her, I think. Tried to pick her up, they couldn’t move her. Same thing with the girls at Garabandal. Strong men could not lift them in their ecstasy.
“This was a different Hollywood.”
Indeed, Gene. The gulf is widening daily. Just think, we had back then a film industry dominated at the top by Jewish men, who were willing to produce films glorifying Christian saints, clergy, religious, and ordinary faithful, and the values they professed. Another world.
I hadn’t seen this movie until about a year and half ago, and now I’ve seen it at least 7 times. Excellent film, and I pray no one ever tries to make an updated version of it.
