Natalie Schafer was in her mid 60s when she played Mrs. Howell. She was sensitive about her age. It was long thought her birth year was 1912. It came out after her death in 1991 that she was born in 1900. She gave Mrs. Howell a delightfully daffy, non-sequitur quality. She and Jim Backus made a good team.
My wife will be 60 years old next month. I am 65 years old. I still think she is as sexy as when I marred her, and a darn sight more beautiful than any of these younger things running around in hot pants and bras.
