Your comment about Adam and Eve reminded me of this:
The Native American creation story relates that when the Great Spirit created the world and everything in it, Man and all the animals were gathered on a great plain. A small crack appeared in the ground between Man and the animals. It quickly grew wider and deeper separating mankind from the animal kingdom. The plain rumbled and shook as the fissure grew. Suddenly, just before the gulf became an unbreachable chasm, Dog leapt across, and stood with Man.
