Sooo…the stage show, Hamilton, wasn’t ignorant enough, now they need to have a Black man portray Hitler. T’would seem Blackface is OK, so long as a minority inflicts it. ..I rather doubt they’ll apologize for smearing Dumbo or Al Jolson though.
Yeah that won’t happen because it doesn’t fit the “white person = evil” narrative.
Disney – in it’s attempt to not cast “white people” as lead roles, has completely re-defined it’s latest Live action animation of The Little Mermaid and have cast the main character Ariel as a black girl with dreadlocks. I’m disappointed as it was a favourite and not how Ariel should be cast IMHO. The original 1989 Disney animation of The Little Mermaid, admittedly veered away from Anderson’s original fairytale back in 1989. However, Ariel in the 1989 version is the daughter of King Triton and she is characterised as a white girl with fiery red hair- voiced by a white actress Jodi Benson. Ursula, the villain of the story, was originally voiced by a white woman- Pat Carroll. The animated version of Ursula had every characteristic of a black lady (large physique, heavy make-up, mannerisms) and black singers/actresses were apparently vying for the role. Ursula- who steals Ariels voice and preys on “Poor unfortunate Souls” by keeping a garden of mermaids whose soul she has taken in exchange for something – is being played by Melissa McCarthy- a white comedians/actress not known for any singing talent. You couldn’t have a predatory matriarchal-type black woman preying on a desperate black Ariel. It doesn’t suit the direction Disney’s current race equity cast quota or messaging. Further, Disney now puts racism and sexism warning at the beginning of its animation movies which may be “offensive”. As if an 8 year old watching Snow White is thinking about “consent” or #MeToo or a 10 year old is watching Peter Pan and picking up the “mocking” of Native Americans, or even the alleged “islamophobia” in Aladdin. This wokeness surely will be affecting Disney’s bottom line.
“..even the alleged ‘islamophobia’ in Aladdin.”
jaw drops ..They do know that Aladdin…comes from the 1001 Arabian Nights?? Or, if Wikipedia is to be believed, …was written by a Syrian Christian?? At worst, it’s Mid-Eastern, not European.
“As if an 8 year old watching Snow White…”
Yah, well, Jim Crow is not named; I doubt most kids will know–or care–about him. Not without an adult telling them. Disney still chose to move that movie to the adults-only section of the site.
