These days, every time PF or my own Bishop speaks – I feel like I’m being gaslighted. It’s spilled over to my default take on most sermons (and I know is not healthy.)
“End Racism” is a favorite of my Bishop. Congregants at my parish are of all different backgrounds and skin color. We all look at each other and wonder “What?”
– gaslighting.
It is among my frustrations that His Holiness uses the Parable of the Prodigal Son as a hammer to beat us with. He loves that parable but, to him the Good Son isn’t, well, “good” at all. He tells it as though the Good Son is merely a bigoted, intolerant jerk who has to be put in his place by the father. We who adhere to Church teaching and don’t roll over to this new ideology are merely this and Pope Francis uses Scripture to alienate us and justify our fellow Catholics taking a dislike to us.
Looking at Scripture though, what we see is the father looking on the Good Son with love. He reminds him that he IS appreciated and that everything he has is his because he has remained true and faithful. It is not a choice between the sons that the father makes but an affirmation of both, the Good Son as his heir and the Prodigal Son as his beloved child.
His Holiness openly says, on a regular basis, “you conservatives and, in particular, you Americans are what’s wrong with the Church. If you weren’t here, the Church would thrive and I want you to voluntarily leave, to run away like an errant child, to starve in the cold… Because then it won’t be my fault, it will be yours.”
Even if he WERE right about us being the problem in the Church, his conduct is utterly reprehensible. It displays no wisdom, no faith, no hope, and no charity so please explain to me how it is at all a Christian perspective?
PF can beat the Trads the same way the GOP beats pro-lifers because he knows they really won’t go anywhere else and will take the beating. But appealing to libs feels nice, spreads the message and maybe gets more butts in seats. It does nothing to spread the faith, but it feels good and gets likes on social media.
Leftist ‘tolerance’ is code for ‘my way or the highway.’
