This is an interesting theory. I’d say that a lot of the non-Christians who think that way hang out in the same rooms as progressive Christians, but I don’t know how many progressive Christians there are that think that way. More likely the progressive Christians think that we’re misinterpreting Scripture. Or they go beyond Marcion and say that the Old and New Testament god was evil until about 1995 (or possibly 2030).
In my experience when “progressive” Catholics say that you are misinterpreting the Old Testament what they really mean is “you are failing to see that the Old Testament is nothing but a fallible historical document.”
Or to put it another way, they would agree with the following statement that the Catholic Encyclopedia uses to describe Marcion’s views: ” the Old Testament was a scandal to the faithful and a stumbling-block to the refined and intellectual gentiles by its crudity and cruelty, and the Old Testament had to be set aside.”
The God of the Old Testament is just as loving, merciful, kind, forebearing, just, and impartial as the God in the New Testament.
And the God in the New Testament is just as righteous, holy, and demanding as the God in the Old Testament.
Why is that? SAME GOD!
BTW, Jesus made the Law MORE strict: Looking at a woman lustfully is just like adultery. Get angry at your brother is just like murder. And under the New Covenant, Ananias and Sapphira were struck DEAD for lying to the Holy Spirit. Boom!
Suck it up, Fruitcakes! Our God is an AWESOME God!
