I read the comic strip and thought to myself, “So what? Some women saying kind things to men.” I have said and do say similar things to women. I would never think of being disrespectful or of harrassing them. Just the opposite, in fact. What is the world coming to that we are shamed by being cordial in giving compliments?
LQC, I think that’s Jordan Peterson’s point.
Turnabout is fair play.
Some men I used to know would have loved being ‘harassed’ by a woman.
One comment on this made me laugh:
“Men will keep a shirt for 20 years because a girl once told him it looked good on him”
😀
I would smile for, like, a month if any of these things happened to me.
Women, especially young women, receive a lot of attention from men, wanted and unwanted. Your average unmarried man can go a very long time without receiving such attention, and when it happens most men remember it and like it.
The young men in our families have had a difficult time of it.

Yeah the horror- I could think of worse things being said than compliments. However, it doesn’t hurt to have a developed emotional intelligence whereby you can read the type of person you plan to direct your compliment at. If the person is prickly by nature, your compliment will most likely be misconstrued regardless- so don’t bother. Mind you, that rule applies to both the sexes.
Also, I don’t believe anybody is born with a comprehensive understanding of the opposite sex. You kinda have to figure it out as you go along and intentionally work at it. Like anything, you get out what you put in.
Also, I don’t believe anybody is born with a comprehensive understanding of the opposite sex.
Well, I know that is true of me and I will be 66 next month!
Give it up – its an impossible task Don. I’m 80 and have realised its time to rank it as another non-achievment in my life. 😉
🙂
Ha! @Don and Don. I’m sure you have done better than you think (that’s a compliment 😉)
40 years and counting on my marriage so I could have done worse!
God Bless Don.
I’ve seen this doing rounds of twitter, it’s a goldmine.
Consensus is that “lovely gents” is how the second one should be phrased, though, and the computer one is only uncommon because of the breakdown in relations between the sexes where SMILING will be treated as throwing yourself at a guy, nevermind a minor complement or flirting.
Sorry, not ‘should be,’ but ‘is’ phrased. Several folks reported hearing it and Not Having An Issue.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding:
Toula Portokalos : Ma, Dad is so stubborn. What he says goes. “Ah, the man is the head of the house!”
Maria Portokalos : Let me tell you something, Toula. The man is the head, but the woman is the neck. And she can turn the head any way she wants.
Very true. Men, be careful out there.
