A continuing series. John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart were three decades too old for their roles, the film was made in black and white at a time when that was becoming an anachronism, John Ford was ailing and many film critics at the time thought his best days were behind him. None of that mattered. With Lee Marvin as Liberty Valance, one of the greatest of screen villains, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) managed to take the Western genre, breath new life into it, and say something very profound about what History is and what people think it is. Over the decades I have seen this film at least a dozen times and each time I see new things. If you have not seen this gem, please remedy that lack.
