The media outside of Argentina has studiously avoided researching the past of this Pope from the peripheries, and my guess is that the Pope does not want the international attention to his past that a return to Argentina would bring. There is still much about the past of this Pope that is obscure and mysterious, even for a Jesuit.
Criminals Rarely Return to the Scenes of Earlier Crimes
- Donald R. McClarey
Donald R. McClarey
Cradle Catholic. Active in the pro-life movement since 1973. Father of three, one in Heaven, and happily married for 43 years. Small town lawyer and amateur historian. Former president of the board of directors of the local crisis pregnancy center for a decade.
What information would he be wanting to avoid by not visiting Argentinia?
Reminders about abusers among his cronies. Rumors about his relation with the military dictatorship that ruled Argentina. Details to fill in the lacunae of his life, especially the period of his internal exile by the Jesuits. Lots of ,mysteries and empty spots regarding his life in Argentina.
PF grew up during the Peron years. That affected people in different ways and continues to have an effect on the country today. Its social and economic structure never fully recovered. The disastrous and irrational Falklands War is an example of a lack of competent leadership. I would not say that this Pope follows a particular model of behavior but it does seem that he may have been influenced negatively by the environment.
There is nothing mysterious or obscure about what this man believes and does today. He isn’t the pope.
His dysfunctional family dynamics would be another topic. He seems to be estranged from most of his family.
It would help explain why he has not the slightest capacity for fatherhood in the spiritual sense.
I agree Elaine, but I spent a few years denying the trouble we saw… I wanted to to give the benefit of the doubt.
It seems though that Argentinians could bring up what they know even if he never visits. Why would they hesitate?

It’s humiliating as Catholics that we have to accept a tainted leader. It’s very hard to come to terms with. It’s just shouldn’t be like this.
