The clergy in England at the time of Saint Thomas More, mostly, with grand exceptions like his friend Bishop John Fisher, betrayed Christ. When that happens the laity have a duty, not a right but a duty, to stand for the Faith.
Even more relevant now that we will have a Cardinal McElroy.
“Even more relevant now that we will have a Cardinal McElroy.”
I hadn’t heard … Lord have mercy!
I just finished reading a book about Bl Franz Jagerstatter, executed for refusing to serve in the Nazi army. Another case of a layman holding the line when all the clergy told him to go along.
I would note that there were steadfast loyal adherents to the Old Church (Catholic) among the Lords and commoners during that period. Few were publicly known but they kept the faith alive in England and Scotland.
Recusant families were 20% of the populace in the northern part of England and among the Gaelic speakers in Scottish Western Isles. Laymen could be fined or imprisoned but discovered priests were put to death. In 1829 the Catholic Emancipation Act was enacted freeing Catholics from punishments and allowing them to openly practice their Faith.
Donald: I would note that there are steadfast loyal adherents to the true Catholic Church who are keeping the true faith alive by exposing and rejecting the counterfeit church born in Vatican II. We have with us all of the true Saints and the Doctors of the Church and the true popes.
