This is wild. I hadn't seen it. Florida Representative Carlos Guillermo Smith questions whether communism has actually killed anyone. Again, this is Florida, so a number of the people in this very room — his colleagues — have relatives who were killed by communists. https://t.co/nR21BlqQmh

A hundred million slaughtered. Can’t make a Socialist omelet without breaking a few eggs I guess. To be fair the resolution condemned democratic socialism, but the more socialist a polity is, the less democratic it tends to be. The Communists of course always contended that they were the true democrats, hence the formulation people’s republic.
Killing that Representative Smith proudly gets behind:

Democratic socialism may be theoretically possible, but it’s not stable. Very quickly democracy is discarded to preserve socialism or socialism is discarded to preserve democracy (as happened in much of Scandinavia). The peasants may accept dispossessing the landlord as a means to get their own land, but they have no longterm interest in collectivism.
I don’t know who said it, but I am in full accord with the following verdict on Socialism: right answer, wrong species. Leave it to the termites.
