Think of the worst job you ever had and then toss in kill or be killed, viewing endless corpses, some of women and children, and then imagine yourself either killed or maimed for life. All this is going on while you are hungry, dead tired and terrified, and making decisions on the fly that may haunt you for the rest of your life. After that mental examination, and if you believe the cause is worth it, then go and fight, but do so with zero illusions about what you are getting into.
This is not Hemmingway’s Spanish civil war. This is not even Vietnam and certainly not the 100 hour Gulf War. Those of us who served have tried to tell the public for centuries that war is a serious and nasty business but our politicians keep thinking they are the Roman senate going after Carthage for the third time.
“Roman Senate after Carthage.”Great comment.
