We’ve come a long way–down, and not far from out.

Personally, I don’t watch TV, so I’m ‘out of it’ and glad to be so.

It isn’t much of a caricature. Did anyone at Gillette lose their job? Corporations who invest a great deal in advertising seem to (a) be run by people who imbibed the ideology of the arts and sciences faculties and the teacher training faculties while they were in business school or (b) be run by people who are one end of a daisy-chain of principal-agent problems.

As far as I know, Gillette didn’t even fire their ad agency.

I miss the old days, when advertising consisted of drink our beer/use our overly scented personal care products and women will not only take their clothes, off, but throw themselves at you, lucky boy.

Heck, I miss seeing cereal adds for kids instead of for pets!

The executive in charge of Proctor & Gamble’s North American operations is Carolyn Tastad. She issued a non mea culpa afterward and she’s still in her job a year and a half later. She’s paid $5,000,000 a year to trash the Gillette brand and reduce their market share (by one account, down from 70% to 50%). Stickin’ to Schick in the future. Or maybe I buy a Norelco.

Ach. Never understood why people found that ad amusing.

Truly amusing ads have cats in them.

My boys have a theory that this is about the broader global market. Especially China. I remember when we reached out to China in the 90s and it drew flak from both sides of the aisle. After all, China was still antagonistic and Tiananmen Square fresh in our minds. What better way to assure carte blanche there (or other similar places) than by convincing those who might fuss that it’s them and their civilization (the West, America, etc.) who are the real reprobates. So sit down, shut up, and let them court those endless tens of millions of potential customers in the world. After all, what’s losing a million American customers when just 10% of China might be at hand.

Wouldn’t discount that. The thing is, the dame I referred to above is supposedly in charge of Proctor and Gamble’s North American operations. Note also that the ads were in English.

Maybe “Gillette didn’t even fire their ad agency“, but I fired Gillette. Harry’s Razors ever since, and they’re better.

Perhaps I am but a curmudgeoness, but my reflex reaction to most current ads (and PSAs) is “Who the hell do you think you are?”. Followed by leaving the room for a fresh cup of tea.

SOUTHCOAST you said it like it is – I’m with you. Notice how some ad agencies are pushing the non-traditional families of whatever stripes? Not many commercials today make me want to rush out and buy their products.

David WS: I also fired Gillette. Schick makes the best blade cartridge razors anyway, IMO. I hope they keep their wokeness to themselves because my beloved bride hates beards. Or at least, she hates them on me.
Southcoast and Texdon: Amen twice.
We have reached the point where the only TV we watch in “real time” is EWTN or weather reports. Everything else is either recorded by us so we can zip through the ads or is from purchased DVD’s. No streaming, as all the programs look like garbage to us and the vendors are all fully woke, anyway. A pox on all their houses.

Any one remember Stan Freeberg? Very clever radio spots.
Jello’s animated Chinese Baby commercial couldn’t be aired nowadays.
