Polling worked, after a fashion, back sixty years ago when almost all Americans had dial up listed numbers and were easy to reach. The march of technology has rendered much of polling obsolete with many Americans almost impossible to reach at home. I am in that category. There are also far more people who refuse to participate in polls if they are reached. Thus new methods have to be utilized to the production of polls on the scanty responses the pollsters receive. I believe the collective term for these methods is properly “guessing”. The Republicans may well have poor midterm results, a common event unless an economy is very good, or a massive event like 9-11 occurs, but polls, especially close polls, leave me yearning for the “scientific” methods of Roman augers examining chicken entrails. The dead birds could at least be fried up afterwards, thus getting some benefit from the farce.
