Only a few men during the life of Aquinas could decipher his scratchings, most notably Friar Reginald of Piperno, his friend and successor at the University of Naples. He was the confessor of the Angelic Doctor, and Aquinas dedicated several of his works to him. Aquinas knew that his penmanship was poor and almost impossible to read, so he dictated most of his works, often to several scribes at the same time.
