I recall when I was a kid that some of the older priests I quietly observed, seemed distinctly less than enthusiastic about Vatican II. They rarely spoke out, but they did not reflect the rah-rah official tone about Vatican II. Of course we were being taught Catechism by reading the Baltimore Catechism, and I could not help but notice that the Church as described in the Catechism did not seem big on change within the Church, quite the reverse, and that what was going on in the aftermath of Vatican II was nothing but change after change within the Church. Sixty years on from Vatican II the official line remains unchanging, that Vatican II brought a wonderful spring time to the Church. Whenever anyone is asking you to deny what you can see with your own eyes, chances are that snake oil is being sold.

The New Spring in the Church with the Council reminds me of all the people who have told me soccer is the Next Big Thingâ„¢ here in America for the past 30-40 years. Always ahead, never quite ever getting there. At some point, they just get tuned out.
Josh is quite correct. The priest who taught us in high school religion class at the time told us about the goals of VII but never spoke about how we would get there. I graduated before the flaws in the process became more apparent.

I remember quite well the great number of priests, seminarians and nuns who quit. People were asking the question is there something they know that we don´t know? Is it all a lie?
I guess some hopeful Catholics thought that there would be some big unification of Protestant churches with the Catholic Church. Obviously , that did not happen and it won’t happen, because Protestant churches would have to admit error on order to be Catholic. Won’t happen.
Bugnini lied to Sacrsanctum Concilium and to Pope Paul VI about the Mass and the Missal. This is documented fact. Pope Paul VI shipped him off to Teheran for his efforts Bugnini wanted a liturgy that would be appealing to Protestants. So he created it. Paul VI implemented it. To this day we are told of the “richness” of the Novus Ordo, just ask Cardinal Roche.

Richness of the abolition of Ember Days, Rogation Days, the suppression of the octaves of Pentecost and Epiphany (Ephiphany’s octave was suppressed in 1955, I think, but Bugnini had a role in that), no more Feast of the Precious Blood of Jesus…no more Sundays after Pentecost which puts the Novus Ordo in opposition to the Quorbono of the Maronites and the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom…where is this richness?
The Church needs a papacy which takes a good, hard look at the Council and what has happened since. The Bergoglio.papacy set back relations with Orthodoxy, which Pope JPII worked on and, except for Moscow, who will NEVER join with Rome. Nobody in the Holy See confronts “Catholic” politicians who support abortion. Nor do the Bishops Conferences of the respective nations. Bishops ignored Ex Corde Ecclisiae, which was to ensure theologians in “Catholic” colleges and universities were not spouting nonsense
Amoris Latitiae, Traditiones Custodes and Fiducia Supplicans are garbage. So is Pachamama. These offenses deserve excommunication. What the FSSPX did is small potatoes compared to so many other things, including the continuing BS of the German bishops.
Jesus is God. Not Vatican II. Not Section 1324 of Canon Law, or whatever it is.
The Church can speak out in favor of the poor and the oppressed. There is a place for that. The Holy See has long been painfully ignorant of economics and the obligation of governments of nations to protect the safety, security and rights of their citizens.

Penguins Fan’s comment about a hoped for Protestant reunion is important.
I wonder if the liturgical reform might have worked too well, in the sense that it did not provide the impetus for conversion by making it too acceptable to Protestants. That is, it perhaps ended up (perhaps even with good intentions) playing into the structurally necessary indifferentism that is endemic to Protestantism, and especially of the lower evangelical kind.
