Saint of the Day Quote: Saint Amandina of Schakkebroek
Donald R. McClarey
I pray God, not to save the martyrs, but to fortify them.
Said by Saint Amandina of Schakkebroek during the Boxer Rebellion in China in which she and her seven fellow sisters of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary would be martyred.

The absolute senselessness of the murder of these wonderful Catholic consecrated holy women during the so-called Boxer Rebellion (1899-1901), they doing expiation for the injuries and insults of other men involved in completely unrelated matters, reminds us that often God’s call to martyrdom is in the midst of mindless irrational human craziness and hatred—and yet we may have to be ready to pay the ultimate price and not waste memory space trying to ask the futile question, “Why? Why me, Lord?”
