The Ukraine War has been stalemated now for several years, with the Ukrainians becoming more adept at hitting Russian economic targets thousands of miles from the battlefield with drone strikes. Putin doesn’t seem to have a clue what to do next, with some of his more deranged sycophants calling for the use of tactical nukes. Putin threw himself into a briar patch and now he, and Russia, are stuck in it.

You make an excellent point. When the Soviet Union was intact, and Stalin absolute, the USSR could grind Nazi Germany into the earth–at an appalling cost; things are different now.
Putin cannot lose. So, the maniacal use of tactical nukes is possible. Bet on it.
