Papal Tiaras were gifted to John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis but none of them.wore them.
Francis, as usual, was rude about it since it was a Traditional element.

The money from Pope Paul VI’s sale of the tiara is gone, but why doesn’t the person who bought it sell it to feed the poor? And the person who buys it from him? Etc?
This is such an easy thought experiment that I’m convinced the people who propose these ideas care less about the poor than they do about impoverishing the Church and our culture in general.

Out of charity, I’m trying to think of a non-avaricious reason someone would want to purchase this jewel-encrusted crown. I’m drawing a blank. Even if the goal was a gift for The Church, wouldn’t a free-will contribution be better? The Church used to encourage people to avoid near occasions of sin, not indulge in them.

Indeed. The man seemed incapable of graciousness.

“ Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, “Why wasn’t this [tiara] sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.”

He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.” -John 12:4-ff

Steve, Mary gave the spikenard to Jesus … She didn’t buy it from Peter for her own personal use.

CAG-

Altruistic reason:

Because institutions get stupid and discard things they will want in the future.

I know of some altar rails patiently waiting in barns for the Church to snap out of its groovy, “I’m ok you’re ok” phase…
