”It isn’t “traditional Catholicism” to treat the hierarchy with contempt”.

However, it is very much “synodal, progressive catholicism” for the hierarchy to treat the laity— especially trad Catholic laity— with contempt.

If you don’t think that’s true, just ask a layman from Chicago, or DC, or Austin, or Charlotte, or Milwaukee…

Contempt not for the hierarchy, but rather contempt for those members of the hierarchy that hold Tradition, holiness, and Truth in contempt.

A monarchist can opine that the king is an ass, but remain a monarchist. A republican can believe his representative to be a snake and still believe in the republic. The doctor may be a quack and yet not invalidate medicine.

The Bruised Optimist. Quite correct. For all his moral, diplomatic, clerical and religious offenses and shortcomings, Alexander was most traditional and orthodox in his theology. Contradictory it may seem, it fit it quite well with his idea of authority and unity in the Church that relied on divine establishment for its rules of order.
