Although there is a cure for leprosy, there are many colonies in the third world. Last I heard there was a leper colony in the South.
Established as the Louisiana Leper Home in 1894, it became the federal National Leprosarium and treated all U.S. leprosy (Hansen’s disease) cases, becoming a major research center.
Closure: The mandatory quarantine ended in the 1960s, with the facility transitioning to an outpatient center and eventually closing its inpatient services in 1999, becoming the National Hansen’s Disease Museum
