Uncle Billy’s brother, who started the Baily’s Building and Loan, had a very important saying hanging under a photo of George’s dad in his office;
The only things that you take with you
are the things you’ve given away.
I like that.

And yet the legal system in this country serves up another deterrent to doing this. Some members of our parish did something similar with a man who retired from running a furnace repair business so he knew what he was doing. We were cautioned to go out by twos to make sure that there were no “claims” against the volunteers. And then we were further cautioned that we should get insurance since if something went wrong we would get sued. That would definitely fall into the “no good deed goes unpunished” category, but unfortunately, in most states, there is no exemption for good Samaritans. Sad that the money has to go to an insurance company before it can go to the people that need it but it is where we are. We did it anyway.
The best part of the story:
“We did it anyway.”
