Is Carl Sagan talking about the metaphysical world, that is eternity? Is he mocking the faithful or is Sagan praising God in his ignorance?
Sagan always impressed me as a sort of very clever 15-year-old who had arrived at The Truth and never got over it. The Eternal Sophomore.
“Life” as Sagan would describe it, is only an existence on Earth. Life after death? Billions and billions of extraordinary life ahead.
Nobody was as convinced of the genius of Carl Sagan as was Sagan, himself. It never ceases to amaze me how many “scientists” can look at the wonders of this universe, especially the mathematical and physical constants, and maintain (publicly, at least) that it’s all just a cosmic accident.
Aesthetic materialists spend a life marvelling at the beauty of a doorway without ever stopping to ask what the doorway is *for*

“Jargon, not argument, is your best ally in keeping him from the Church. Don’t waste time trying to make him think that materialism is true! Make him think it is strong, or stark, or courageous-that it is the philosophy of the future. That’s the sort of thing he cares about.”
Screwtape Letters
