I would argue that is exactly the Christian part that allows the fierceness and mildness to dwell in the same man. His influence over the knight keeps either element from dominating.
I might further argue that this is one of the reasons for the denigration of knighthood, as it historically was, since it becomes a parody of mildness or fierceness if you remove Christ.
