DEI Kills

Go here to read the rest.  DEI is always mispelled.  The correct spelling is DIE.

“This isn’t about inclusion anymore,” the source said. “It’s about politics, payouts, and pretending everything’s fine. “

And it’s “virtuous”.

They’d have to admit that (a) men perform distinct functions which women are ill-equipped to perform and (b) that conventional screening systems have not been treating their mascots unfairly. That in turn means (i) their supposed position as paladin for their mascots was imaginary – the competent did not need them and those that needed them were people who could not perform. It also means that (ii) the accusations they make against people they despise (and which a large part of their self-understanding) are rubbish and have long been rubbish.

Those that forget biology are doomed to repeat it. Or was that history? No matter as long as no ones feelings get hurt.

The leadership pursuing these DIE policies have largely insulated themselves from any consequences for their actions. Mayor Wu will continue with her ideological ‘reimagining’ of the fire department until/unless some disaster happens— and then she will distance herself and scapegoat an underling, most likely the fire chief she pressured to implement her DIE nonsense.

We saw this scenario happen in the aftermath of the Los Angeles wildfires earlier this year. Mayor Karen Bass was rightly excoriated for her handling of the fires, and to save her own skin threw her LBGT DIE-hire Fire Chief Kristin Crowley to the wolves. (Although while Crowley was eventually fired and lost her appeal, she was quickly assigned a position as Assistant Chief of Operations for the San Fernando Valley. I assume she was offered that consolation prize to buy her cooperation and continued silence).

You see the same sort of process happen when a special interest group is not in “sufficient numbers” for a profession, such as not having enough women firefighters, black doctors, etc. Since the article in the post is about firefighters and physical requirements are the most obvious (both in terms of why they are necessary and in terms of why women might not meet them) we’ll go with that example:

1.) Activists lament the lack of female firefighters and insist that this is due to bigotry in hiring and women not being told that they can be firefighters. They heavily target women in recruiting, but insist that women will be held to the same standards.

2.) Despite large number of female applicants, very few women pass the tests; maybe one or two. Activists look for “soft” ways to make the tests easier, such as allowing women to take them as many times as they want while men get one chance, providing training programs only open to women, etc. The idea being that the same standards are applied, but women get more help.

3.) Even with the help there are very few women firefighters. Now the standards get bent. If a test has a time limit, maybe the administrator looks the other way when a woman goes over the time. Substitutions might be made; for example if a certain number of push-ups are required, women might be allowed to do kneeling pushups instead of full push-ups, with the rationale being that the standards never specified the type (even though it had always been understood to be full push-ups.)

4.) These relaxed standards allow a few more women to get through, but they are still vastly outnumbered by men. Now the activists start attacking the standards themselves. They will say that many of the standards do not actually apply to the job and are only there to screen out women. (I’ve actually seen people argue that a firefighter shouldn’t be required to be able to pick up and carry someone else, since that isn’t something they need to do on every call!) The standards will be lowered until enough women can get in, though they will be lowered across the board so the activists can still technically say “everyone is being held to the same standards.”

5.) Now that the standards have been lowered, other groups will take advantage. For example, out of shape men can now pass the requirements. This will annoy the original activists, since they just wanted to help women, but they can’t really do anything about it without admitting that they lowered the standards and giving up the whole game.

6.) The profession is increasingly taken over by people who are unfit to do the job. All the actual work will be done by veterans who joined before the lowering of the standards, until they retire or quite in disgust. The remainder will double down on identity politics, since they know that they need a woke environment to keep their jobs (and it’s not like they can do the job they were hired for in the first place.)

7.) Things slowly degrade until they reach an absurd point where the original purpose has entirely been forgotten, in this case a fire department where no one is willing to put out a fire. Unfortunately this will not be obvious to the public until a high profile disaster highlights the incompetence.

Rudolph-
I know a guy in step 6. Hired before his major metro FD went woke, now has to do the work for people half his age who never should have been there in the first place or didn’t get the rigorous training that would have weeded out those who couldn’t do the job.
He feels he has to serve out his time to get the pension. He calls it the “golden handcuffs” 💔
