Friar Tuck

Go here to read the rest.  I prefer friars, other things being equal, to be jovial.  An odd view perhaps for a teetotaler like me, but I think it aids them in presenting the Gospel to people in the World, which was and is the task of friars.  As Saint Francis said, let gloom and despair be among the Devil and his disciples.

Friar Paolo Benanti advising Giorgia Meloni on AI! What a coincidence! Paolo means Paul in Italian, my real name, and I just finished drafting the technology control plan on AI at Neutrons ‘R Us! And no, it’s not about geek technobabble. It’s about regulatory compliance, ethics, risk management, protection of information, etc.

Irrelevant Sidenote: Speaking of regulation, Donald Trump fired Christopher Hanson from the US NRC. If you recall, he was the guy with his bachelors and masters in divinity and forestry whom Biden had nominated and a Democrat majority Senate had confirmed to the US NRC back in 2021. Now he’s out and all the liberals are in an uproar that Trump is jeopardizing the independence of the US NRC. What idiots! They don’t even understand that Commissioners should actually be qualified in nuclear energy in order to sit on the Commission! Yes, Trump is doing EXACTLY what I voted for (except for his Execuive Order on In Vitro Fertilization; that’s his one big mistake so far).

I respect teetotalers but a word to the wise, be careful about taking pride in that.
Our Lord changed water into wine with his first miracle for the Wedding in Cana.
-and beer is typically 1/2 wine’s ABV.

Moderation in all things; and if you do invite a Friar over make sure you serve chicken wings.

Ok Don. Such an “indulgence” helps me to “Pray, Hope and Not Worry.”
Plus it drives my Protestant friends crazy. 🙂

“Padre Pio, a Capuchin friar and Catholic priest known for his piety and stigmata, was known to enjoy a glass of beer in the late afternoon.Specifically, he would have a glass of beer at 5:30 PM and also after blessing religious articles. Following his beer, he would spend time with other friars in fellowship. “

The Friar Tuck in the British TV series was well cast. Richard Greene was Robin Hood. Yes Minister had Paul Eddington (Will Scarlett).

There’s also the “Bread Monk”, Fr. Dominic Garramone of St. Bede Abbey in Peru, Illinois (their high school is my alma mater!) who used to have a show on PBS:

American Catholics are soooo influenced by Protestantism.
All I need is a pint a day and sourdough bread which I bake weekly.
Also make Kimchi. I suppose it’s a fermentation thing.
I do not think I’m worse than anyone nor better than anyone for doing these things..

We’re also a nation of extremes. If we’re not super-sizing we’re fasting, if we’re not totally abstaining we’re drinking triple IPAs.

Please just let me enjoy the Hefeweizen I made and spread the joy when I can.
And “indulge” in some sour dough bread and kimchi.
