Once I thought this applied only to the old Soviet Union. More fool I.
Thought For The Day

Cradle Catholic. Active in the pro-life movement since 1973. Father of three, one in Heaven, and happily married for 43 years. Small town lawyer and amateur historian. Former president of the board of directors of the local crisis pregnancy center for a decade.
“You must understand, the leading Bolsheviks who took over Russia were not Russians. They hated Russians. They hated Christians. Driven by ethnic hatred they tortured and slaughtered millions of Russians without a shred of human remorse. It cannot be overstated. Bolshevism committed the greatest human slaughter of all time. The fact that most of the world is ignorant and uncaring about this enormous crime is proof that the global media is in the hands of the perpetrators.” ~ Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
“……..that the global media is in the hands of the perpetrators.”
The hatred for Christians and morality will always be, until that one beautiful and terrible day. A day of liberation. A day promised to us who believe and obey.
A day that will never end, for the Light thereof is eternal and no media outlets will be able to spin high fiction into the event, for evil has passed away and can not withstand the brilliance of The Light.
Hold Fast.
Unfortunately Solzhenitsyn late in his life had a bug up his butt about Jews. Contrary to the quoted statement, almost all the leading Bolsheviks were Russians. The big exceptions were Stalin, a Georgian, and his mortal enemy, Trotsky, an apostate Jew.
The statement about global media hit a nerve for me since we have been under the thumb of a currupt media complex that rewards biased journalism at the expense of freedom. Jail your political opponent is a fashion that hasn’t gone out of style. Too bad. Thank you for the clarification on his misconception of leading Bolsheviks.
Don, I don’t think you were a fool.
I think you had the privilege of living in years with fewer liars.
I, myself, am undecided. Did lying accelerate and metastasize in the 1990s with the shenanigans surrounding OJ, Clinton, and Anita Hill or was it that I began to notice at that time?
I lean toward the idea that truth began an accelerated decline at that time, leading to our current state of affairs in which many cannot distinguish man from woman, or reality from AI. What is more, many do not want to.
Any particular news item bringing this quote to mind today?
Bruised Optimist – I’ve often said that we’ve gone through three phases of lying in politics. In the Nixon era, lying was something to be ashamed of. Nixon had to deny it. Under Clinton, it became public. He was good at it. Under Obama, we stopped even tracking whether statements were true or false. He’d just say things.

Bob Kerrey referred to him as ‘an unusually good liar”. Richard John Neuhaus pointed out that an unusually good liar would not have a reputation for being an unusually good liar. Clinton was an unusually ready liar and the vociferous element in the Democratic Party was fine with that.
Cumulative, although poor puppet Biden trying to claim that he has just now learned that he has prostate cancer that has spread to his bones illustrates Solzhenitsyn’s point quite well.
Art – A friend tells a story about a girl he knew saying to her boyfriend, “I know you’re lying but it sounds so good when you do it.”
A political commentator (I don’t remember who) compared Bill Clinton to Johnny Carson, how we was funny when he was funny, but even funnier when his jokes bombed, and the audience would get excited watching him pull them back in. It’s like, any politician can make you believe the truth, but Bill became Bill when he had to make you believe something you knew was false.
Another comparison would be Tom Brady when he’s down by 8 with 2 minutes left.
Marx and Engels, the philosophical founders of Bolshevism/Communism were both German.
The real danger in the West is not the infringement of free speech, it is people choosing to self censor out of fear of losing employment, status, or friends and family.
It’s “we know we are lying, and we continue lying to ourselves” that presents the greatest danger. And Leftist’s know this. They work for it. They hope for it.
David WS-
1000% correct.
My gut response to “you can’t say that” has always been “watch me.”
Of course, I often don’t follow my gut – sometimes from prudence, but sometimes from cowardice 😞
David WS and Bruised Optimist: I’m in 100% agreement. It’s been ages since I’ve heard anyone say “it’s a free country, I can say what I want!”. That used to be a commonplace saying, and I worry that the reason we no longer hear it is because it’s no longer true.
The free speech movement of the 1960s was anything but.
Commumism’s tentacles spread far and wide. Communists infiltrated Hollywood and the Catholic Church.
Communism developed liberation theology which has wrecked the Church in Latin America.
Cultural Marxism is the woke movement. That and militant feminism, LBGT, racial strife, etc.
Putin knows all of this. Cultural Marxism.has made the West arrogant, flabby and weak. His agency caused most of it.
I will not likely live to see the conclusion but the maxim stands. Good times create weak men. Weak men create hard times. Hard times create tough men. Tough men create good times.
