Burn of the Day

Imagine if we had an honest media.  At the same time imagine that the moon was made of Swiss cheese.  Both are almost equally unlikely.

How ironic. I can remember when it was pointed out that on average more unarmed white Americans are killed each year at the hands of police than unarmed blacks. And yet we were told the most important thing of all was that proportion of blacks killed versus their population. In fact, the entire BLM movement hinged on that one argument. Nice that proportions don’t matter now. But in fairness, it isn’t only the media using this argument, but most commentators on the Left I’ve heard address the issue have argued based on only the actual numbers involved and ignored those all important proportions.

Expropriation without compensation.

Gee. Biological males competing against females is one form of expropriation without compensation. Taking candy from a baby is temporary. Watch your back wokefolk. A new sheriff in town and his arms are long.

Thank you for the clip.
Getting the story straight is refreshing.

Simple rule(s): whenever you hear a statistic without all the base numbers -it’s a lie, and whenever you hear the media speak on something that doesn’t fit their narrative -it’s a lie.
Lastly whenever you hear the media use statistics without base numbers and it’s something that doesn’t fit their narrative -it’s’ a #$@%! LIE.

You’ll recall that Thos Sowell once offered that the ideology of the Anointed appealed to articulate people and articulate people are not necessarily intelligent people. You’ll also recall the studies of the media done by Stanley Rothman and Robert Lichter, which discovered that reporters and editors for the broadcast networks and nationally distributed print publications typically came from tonier backgrounds than did corporation executives. Cultured and/or accomplished people sometimes produce children who are anything but; examples would be Nina Totenberg and Taylor Lorenz. There are also people whose intelligence is manifest only in classroom settings; Ellen Goodman would be an example.

You can wager they’re deceiving you, but do not discount the possibility that it just never occurred to them which denominator to use in assessing risk.

Art:
“Gaming the denominator” I call it in my field (education). If you want a group to look big, use total school enrollment (ignoring kids held back from kindergarten, drop-outs and many homeschoolers in states where registration is not required). To make it look small, use the total 5-18 population. Or you can just lie, as California did about its dropout rate until sued by Dr. Alan Bonsteel.

There was an interview between Don Lemon and Sherriff Clarke about police shootings and race. Lemon began by bringing up a report that claimed that police were more violent with black suspects. Clarke responded by noting that the report showed that black suspects were not more likely to be shot. Lemon actually cuts him off saying that he already knew that, and immediately says that the study was worthless due to low sample size (keep in mind that this is a study that Lemon himself brought up!) And then he immediately goes back to the study to say that it said that police were racist (literally one sentence after he claimed that the study was crap!)

I have never seen a better encapsulation of the leftist attitude towards statistics. For them they are nothing more than a rhetorical device. If they support the leftist narrative, then they cannot be argued with and the conversation must end. If they do not, then the studies were obviously conducted by ignorant bigots and anyone citing them is a racist. As Lemon showed, you can even take both stances when it comes to conclusions from the exact same researchers.

An “honest media”…hmmm… I was helping my daughter find examples of oxymorons yesterday to use as literary devices. I’ll tell her to add “honest media” as an example to her list.

Back to the point, how absurd is the reasoning of PBS News. Even if murdered white farmers accounted for 1 murder, let alone 1% of murders, then that is 1 too many murdered. Are not all lives equal and valuable? Obviously, murdered white farmers are just statistics to PBS News. Imagine substituting the word “white” for “black” and the outrage that would unfold.

Kinda like the “Only a handful of apartment complexes have been taken over by Venezuelan gangs” comment that, in a sane world, would’ve won Trump Colorado.

The liberal media has moved beyond feeling shame.

At one time South Africa was the most developed country in sub-Sahara Africa. In the past three decades it has gone from very promising to a questionable future.
