Back in the Eighties the Feds unleashed Operation Greylord to go after corrupt judges and lawyers in Cook County. Seventeen judges and forty-eight attorneys were nabbed. They were disbarred and the judges were thrown off the bench. Ten years later the Chicago Tribune did a where are they now retrospective. Almost all of them were selling used cars.
It’s not an accident that a lot of corrupt politicians are lawyers as well. It can be difficult to remain faithful while practicing law. To some degree, this is because our profession encourages zealous advocacy, which can sometimes spill over into outright falsehood.
Present company excluded of course. But you will pay a price for it.

I think you’re too hard on your profession. In my 30+ years as a law librarian, I found lawyers on the whole very decent and reasonable—far superior to law professors, who were generally spoiled, with delusions of grandeur.
