I’m recalling an Episcopal rector I once new who lived in a handsome Tudor rectory. The house was granted to the parish by a wealthy local pewsitter and came with an endowment to pay expenses. The vestry was dubious about taking it out of a regard for appearances. They sold the previous rectory and he lived there with various relations for 16 years. His successor lived there briefly at which point the vestry sold it and gave him a housing allowance.
