Go here to read about it. Pope Benedict was probably one of the brightest men to be Pope. Yet he lacked the guts to root out the corruption at the Vatican, seeking to have this cup passed from him by resigning and have his successor fight the battle, which Pope Francis, that living embodiment of corruption, of course declined to do. Popes being intelligent is good; popes having courage is better.

Reminds me of the difference in the military between a staff officer and a commander. Not all excellent staff officers make good commanders.
