Probably people know that Gable’s mother was Catholic, and he was raised Catholic for a time although his father was Methodist, and fiercely opposed that.

His mother’s family., the Hershelmans, were a little better off than his father, who only worked odd jobs, usually in the oil fields in Ohio. Gable spent significant time with his uncle after his mother passed away early in his life. Later, Gable worked with his father in the Oklahoma oil fields, very hard work, obviously. Even though it was the 1920s and before the Great Depression, times were tough for many ordinary Americans.

But it seems to me that Gable met a lot of people of all backgrounds and knew early on to judge people on the basis of their internal character, and not the color of their skin, in his many walks of life before he became a famous actor.
