Great point, Donald. I worry what their full-desperation mode may look like.
Fears about an “imperial presidency” used to assume that it would mean an Augustus: a sort of Roman autocrat overriding constitutional safeguards. No one figured on a Mikado: an ineffectual figurehead manipulated by a bureaucracy over which he had nominal charge. Problem for the Dems is that they haven’t got a shogun, a single “deputy” who actually wields the iron hand up the Emperor’s bum. Failure to maintain unity of command has destroyed many imperial ambitions.
