The popes began hiring Swiss mercenaries in the 15th century. They had a fearsome battlefield reputation and stayed loyal to their paymasters, unlike troops from Italy who often had divided loyalties.   The current Swiss guard is well-trained in modern weaponry to protect the Pope. A minuscule force, but an elite one.

We need Swiss Guards to protect us from this Pope!
