PopeWatch: Hmmm
Donald R. McClarey
Cradle Catholic. Active in the pro-life movement since 1973. Father of three, one in Heaven, and happily married for 41 years. Small town lawyer and amateur historian. Former president of the board of directors of the local crisis pregnancy center for a decade.
God save us from sincere, Cafeteria Catholics.
Why do they need Biden in office so badly?
Do you remember the charges against the Pope re McCarrick and his defense was, you can’t just remove Bishops? And then he just removed Strickland?
I’m unclear as to why this visit would spectacularly backfire. The corruption angle would only matter if there was a media willing to cover it in a serious and committed way; it’s unclear to me why they would choose to do so so near to an election when he is perceived to be (and narrated by them as) generally supportive of their overall agenda.
I’m unclear as to why this visit would spectacularly backfire.
1. Most Americans don’t like clerics climbing into bed with Caesar.
2. Conservative media would be constantly reminding the country what a Leftist loon the Pope is.
3. The Pope trying to embrace Biden, the pro-abort persecutor of Orthodox Catholics, would enrage and rally all pro-lifers.
4. Transgender activists would probably attack the Pope non-stop, furthering chaos and division among the Democrats.
Bring it on!
Remember that this visit will come as the Democrats clean up the likely wreckage (political and physical) of their convention in Chicago. Frankly, a Chicago bishop might not have a usable venue to greet the Pope, nor an overstressed police department the resources to protect him.
I doubt it will have much effect one way or another.
I’m hoping the next Pope will remain in his diocese and keep off of airplanes entirely. John Paul could be quite inspiring, so perhaps there were benefits to his pastoral travel. Not usually the case.
I don’t see that trip happening.
I don’t either. The Pope has a strong aversion to this country and he probably thinks that once is enough, no matter what his Leftist American cardinals want.
Plus, the logistical burden of putting a trip like that together in such short time and the pope’s frail health make such a trip highly unlikely.

I don’t think it’d be seen as political one way or the other unless he visits DC. Even then, I don’t think he’d be an asset to Biden. Well, maybe if he went down to the border instead of DC, but that might not work either.
Pinky might be right. At the same time, Papa Harkonnen (a call-back to another blog post about the pope) loves him some impromptu interviews. American reporters might fall in line with FederalGovernment Inc (TM), but then again, we might get an explosive question about abortion or immigrants, and Pope St. Gallen might hagan-lio all down his front and onto the floor. A priest can dream, can’t he?!
(Even better would be if he reverts to his “coprophagia”-as-metaphor phase and insults the press corps, and they turn on him.)
