Brilliant scene melding the showmanship of Cecil B. Demille with the traditional Passover observance of the Jews. It was no accident that the Passion happened during Passover, with the sacrifice of Christ causing God to pass over our sins, and with Christ instituting the sacrifice of the Mass.
I had a brief conversation about Passover with a mainstream Jewish friend and was surprised by how little of the supernatural was said. He described as a combination of Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July.
I hasten to add that he is someone who attends synagogue and takes it seriously, but although he regards the escape from Egypt to be genuine, and Moses too, there seemed to be no mention of the God who rescued them.
I guess I should not be surprised, considering what Easter in America has become. Nevertheless, it disturbed me when he said that there is a piece of lamb, but you don’t have to eat it. For us, the Lamb is there, but you don’t have to eat Him.
Seems like all faith, even imperfect faith, is on the wane. Meanwhile town meetings are opened with praise for Satan and the Olympics will reportedly begin with an invocation to Olympian Zeus. Even if neither of these are offered seriously (that’s the claim) the realities behind those names will delight.
Where are we going? I feel as if we are sleepwalking into a dystopia that few desire, but few believe is avoidable.
