An African pope would be great. The church is very conservative on that continent. Cardinal Sara will turn 79 in June. He would have made a wonderful pope. Instead we have Francis the First. Pope Benedict XVI was 78 when he was elected Pope.

Gemini also displays ignorance. There is general agreement by historians that the first five centuries of the Church produced three Black Popes, probably North Africans. The concept of race difference did not come about until much later. The concept of civilized and barbarian was much more significant.

The day we get a female Pope is the day I’m taking my Faith elsewhere. I don’t care if she is black, white green or pink.

Ezabelle- I won’t be going anywhere. Takes more than a few heretics to make me abandon ship.

At least then we would know with certainty that she was an antipope!

Scarily, he looks more like Wilton Gregory.

@Donald Link — When I was still a Protestant, for a whilei I attended Tokyo Baptist Church. The pastor at that time was a white man who, if I remember correctly, was born in Rhodesia. Since he later moved to Alabama and became a US citizen, he insisted this made him an African American.

North Africans were mostly “black” in the same sense that Pastor Wood was an “African American”.

If you want to say that North Africans had the heads of dogs, though, there is a tradition that aligns with that.
